Visit Selous
Selous Game now officially part of Nyerere National Park, is one of the largest protected wilderness areas on the African continent, covering over 30,000 square kilometers in southern Tanzania. Named after the legendary British explorer Frederick Courteney Selous and former President Julius Nyerere, this vast, pristine expanse remains one of Africa’s most untouched ecosystems. Defined by the mighty Rufiji River, which carves its way through sprawling savannahs, miombo woodlands, oxbow lakes, and palm-fringed lagoons, Selous offers a stark, untamed contrast to the busy northern safari circuits.

As native guides, we hold a special place in our hearts for Selous because it delivers an authentic, off the beaten path wilderness experience defined by freedom and space. Unlike northern parks with stricter road constraints, Selous allows for diverse safari activities that bring you closer to the wild. Here, you can embark on boat safaris along the intricate channels of the Rufiji River to view wallowing hippos, massive Nile crocodiles, and vibrant birdlife up close. You can also experience intimate ranger-guided walking safaris through the bush or set off on open-vehicle night game drives to track nocturnal predators under the starlit African sky

The wildlife in Selous is wild, abundant, and remarkably varied. The reserve shelters Africa’s largest population of endangered African wild dogs (painted wolves), offering rare opportunities to witness these dynamic predators hunting in packs. Massive herds of elephants, Cape buffaloes, and giraffes roam the riverbanks, while healthy populations of lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, and rare sable antelopes thrive throughout the miombo woodlands. With fewer safari vehicles around, every wildlife encounter feels exclusive, dramatic, and deeply personal.
