Mount Meru
Mount Meru is an active, stratovolcano standing at 4,562 meters (14,967 feet) above sea level, making it the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and the fifth-highest peak in all of Africa. Located in the heart of Arusha National Park, this majestic mountain features a dramatic 1,500 meter caldera wall and an ash cone formed by a massive volcanic explosion over 7,800 years ago. Unlike its famous neighbor Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a quieter, less crowded trekking experience through lush montane forests, heather zones, and rugged alpine ridges, providing a stunning blend of big game wildlife encounters and serious high-altitude trekking.

As local guides, we love leading trekkers up Mount Meru because the climb feels like a wild walking safari mixed with a mountain expedition. The main route the Momella Route begins in the lower montane forests where you trek right alongside wild giraffes, Cape buffaloes, warthogs, and black-and white colobus monkeys under the safety of an armed park ranger. As you gain elevation, the trail winds past the iconic Fig Tree Arch, through giant heather forests, and up toward the saddle between Meru’s two peaks, offering intimate views of the crater floor and the towering ash cone below.

Reaching Socialist Peak (the summit of Mount Meru) delivers one of the most thrilling sunrise moments in East Africa. On summit morning, you navigate a narrow, rocky knife edge ridge in the early hours before dawn, scrambling upward with the stars glowing above you. As the first light breaks, you reach the summit to witness an unforgettable spectacle: the sun rising directly behind the snow capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance, casting its golden glow over the vast Tanzanian plains below. It is a rewarding achievement that stands proudly as a world class adventure in its own right.
