The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera, spanning roughly 260 square kilometers (100 square miles) in northern Tanzania. Formed over two million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed in on itself, this natural amphitheater sits nearly 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside this bowl lies a self-contained ecosystem comprising sweeping short-grass plains, acacia woodlands, freshwater swamps, and the shimmering alkaline waters of Lake Magadi, creating a breathtaking natural wonder often described as the Eighth Wonder of the World.
